Ann Romney on ‘Tonight Show’: ‘This is a guy that I know cares’

ann-romney.jpg Image Credit: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images

Making her first late-night talk show appearance, Ann Romney stopped by The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last night. Unfortunately, there wasn’t Beyonce love, but there was plenty of talk about Mitt.

The wife of Gov. Mitt Romney seemed a bit nervous for her big debut, but Leno guided her through her remarks, as she first spoke about the emergency landing her plane had to make last week. Leno asked her about Romney’s odd-seeming comment,”[airplane] windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that.” The audience laughed, but Mrs. Romney just said that of course he didn’t mean it seriously, and that was just his was of showing that he was worried and he cared.

Romney Cares! could easily have been the theme of the interview. Beyond the airplane comments, Mrs. Romeny emphasized how much her husband cares about America — particularly needed in light of Romney’s now-infamous “47% comment” caught on video. Asked specifically about the tape, Ann said, “This is  a guy that I know cares. …We care about the 100%,” and “There are two things [I know]: He cares, and he’s competent.”

In the second segment, Mrs. Romney spoke a little bit more about her and Gov. Romney’s 43-year marriage (the couple met in high school), sharing that, “He’s a workaholic at work, and when he comes home he’s a playaholic [when their children were growing up].”

Interestingly, Leno brought up the couple’s Mormon beliefs, asking what it would mean for America if elected. “I love the fact that we have the first African-American President,” she said. “That means to me that we’re leaving prejudices behind. If Mitt were elected, that would mean more of the same.”

This post will be updated with video from the appearance once available.

Obama's Fundraising Edges Out Romney In August

type="html" xml:lang="en" xml:base="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/thenewswire/">

WASHINGTON, Sept 10 (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama's re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee raised more than $114 million in August, filling up its coffers for an expensive fall against well-funded Republican rival Mitt Romney.

The Democratic incumbent broadened his donor base with more than 317,000 donors who had never given money before, said Obama campaign manager Jim Messina in a statement.

"The key to fighting back against the special interests writing limitless checks to support Mitt Romney is growing our donor base, and we did substantially in the month of August," Messina said. "That is a critical downpayment on the organization we are building across the country -- the largest grassroots campaign in history."

Romney Raises More Than $111 Million In August

type="html" xml:lang="en" xml:base="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/thenewswire/">

BOSTON, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney raised more than $111 million in August, according to a statement issued by his campaign, maintaining an overwhelming cash advantage over President Barack Obama.

With less than two months to go before the Nov. 6 presidential election, Romney maintained his streak of fundraising dominance as his campaign, the Republican National Committee and state Republican parties reported that together they have about $168.5 million in cash at their disposal.

While Obama shattered every fundraising record in 2008 after becoming the first presidential candidate to opt out of a federal matching funds system, Romney has significantly outpaced the president in his bid for the White House this year.

After raising $101 million in July, Romney and the joint Victory Fund he shares with the Republican National Committee already enjoyed a $60 million cash-on-hand advantage over Obama.

The president's campaign has also burned through money faster than the Republican candidate, spending $58.5 million in July, with about two-thirds of that going to advertising.

Republicans view the combination of Obama's high cash burn rate and polls that show a tight race as evidence that they have withstood the advertising onslaught Obama's campaign launched early in the year.

"This race is a dead heat, even after they have spent over $100 million attacking Mitt Romney with negative ads," one senior Romney adviser said Sunday.

Romney is also now free to spend the millions of dollars he raised during his primary campaign.

Legally, Romney was barred from spending money he raised before he formally accepted the Republican nomination, which he did in Tampa more than a week ago.

The day after Obama accepted his party's nomination for president at the Democratic convention in North Carolina, the Romney campaign demonstrated it was ready to start spending some of that money in a homestretch assault on Obama.

Republicans seized on a disappointing jobs report on Friday morning, announcing they bought ad time in the key swing states Obama won in 2008 but are now in play.

Romney, on the air in the key states of Iowa, Virginia, Colorado, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio and North Carolina, was set to expand his advertising to Wisconsin on Monday.

"What we very deliberately did, we held our powder and we knew these jobs numbers were going to be a big moment," said one Romney adviser. "And we loaded up to come back on Friday, and we've gone up in a big way."

While Romney spent much of the summer fundraising, senior adviser Kevin Madden indicated that the Republican candidate would shift his focus to spending time with voters down the homestretch.

"We'll continue to do some fundraising throughout this month, but I think we're in that critical phase where we're trying to put our emphasis on voter contact and having the governor do more retail campaigning," Madden said.

Fired Up Obama Fundraising Tops Romney In August

type="html" xml:lang="en" xml:base="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/thenewswire/">

WASHINGTON -- The reelection campaign of Barack Obama is back in the lead on the fundraising front after raising $114 million in August. The total, which is a combination of funds raised by the campaign, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Obama's victory committee, exceeds the $111.6 million the Romney campaign said that they raised in combination with the Republican National Committee (RNC) and Romney Victory for the same time period. This marks the first time since the Romney campaign and the RNC started raising money together that the Obama team has beaten them in monthly fundraising.

"The key to fighting back against the special interests writing limitless checks to support Mitt Romney is growing our donor base, and we did substantially in the month of August," Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in a statement. "Fueled by contributions from more than 1.1 million Americans donating an average of $58 -- more than 317,000 who had never contributed to the campaign before -- we raised a total of more than $114 million. That is a critical downpayment on the organization we are building across the country -- the largest grassroots campaign in history."

The fundraising jump could help to put to rest a discussion that has occurred throughout the campaign about how the president is falling short in his fundraising, with the Romney camp's recent heavy fundraising seen as the latest evidence. The stated concern is that Obama is not meeting the fundraising record set in his first run for office in 2008 -- or the $1 billion campaign that officials in, or close to, his campaign allegedly once predicted.

The problem with these assertions -- which have circulated through blogs and news sites -- is that they've been wrong throughout the entire campaign. There is a chance that Obama will match the record $750 million that he raised for his campaign committee in 2008. That depends on the amounts the campaign raises in September and October. (It also depends on the breakdown of the $114 million raised in August and how much is for the campaign itself.)

One thing that is certain, Romney's campaign committee will not come close to reaching $750 in campaign receipts -- assuring that he will not be the "best-funded candidate ever." (Romney would have to raise $500 million for his campaign from August through October, or $200 million more than Obama raised during the same time in 2008.)

In fact, no matter how you slice the funds raised by the two candidates, Obama remains the leader, although Romney made up a lot of ground over the summer. Obama is way ahead when we just consider funds raised by the candidate's campaign committees and significantly leads when including the party committees. The most generous comparison, and the one that includes the just released, although not officially reported, August numbers shows that Obama, the DNC and his two victory committees have raised $689 million since April 2011, while Romney, the RNC and his victory committee have raised $613 million.

While each fundraising month is important, September will be the key month to watch in the post-public financing world. In 2008, Obama raised a record $150 million, for his campaign alone, and $192 million, when including funds raised by the DNC. Can either Obama or Romney match that amount?

The only indicator currently available is a push by the Obama campaign to get 600,000 grassroots donations during the Democratic National Convention week. By the end of Friday, at midnight, the campaign had received 700,000 donations. If those donations come in at the average $58 amount that the campaign has consistently raised then, in one week, they would have raised $40 million, solely from contributions received online.

On Romney's side, the August numbers could be seen as a let down. Raising $111.6 million is impressive, but it isn't much higher than his previous two months despite August including big events like his choice of Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate and the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla. These events should help with fundraising, but they appear to have had minimal impact in August.

Taibbi: Romney Has 'Casual Relationship With Truth And Reality'

Taibbi Romney

Rolling Stone contributing editor Matt Taibbi sounded off on Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney on HuffPost Live Thursday.

Taibbi took on what he described as Romney's hypocritical stance on the nation's deficit given Romney's private equity background, the subject of his recent Rolling Stone article.

"I remember listening to these speeches and then looking around at the press corps and at everybody else and wondering, 'How is it that nobody's bringing up the fact that this guy was a leveraged buyout expert?'" Taibbi told HuffPost Live's Ahmed Shihab-Eldin. "This is how he made his fortune. What is leverage? Leverage is debt. What this guy did for a living is he borrowed money that other people had to pay back."

Taibbi said that the Romney campaign is "trying to make [the election] a referendum on the irresponsibility of the Obama administration" because conversation about the national debt "really strikes a chord with a lot of ordinary Americans who "don't understand how deficit spending works."

Taibbi stopped short of calling Romney a liar, instead saying he "has a casual relationship with truth and reality." But he predicted that Romney would lose to Obama because "ultimately people are going to have a hard time getting behind somebody who fires people for a living and somebody who wants to take away Medicare."

Obama Beats Romney In Convention War

Obama Romney

NEW YORK — President Barack Obama can beat rival Mitt Romney as a television draw, but can't eclipse his old self.

The Nielsen company said 35.7 million people watched the final night of the Democratic convention on Thursday between 10 and 11 p.m. Eastern time. That's when the president delivered his nomination acceptance speech.

Last week, Mitt Romney had 30.3 million viewers for his speech at the GOP convention, with an assist from Clint Eastwood.

Four years ago, Nielsen said candidate Barack Obama's speech was seen by 38.3 million. But that estimate did not include PBS' audience, which no doubt pushed the audience over 40 million.

Even though NBC did not show the second night of this year's convention due to a football game, loyal viewers returned to Brian Williams for the final night. NBC's coverage was seen by 7.38 million viewers on Thursday.

CNN was second with 5.56 million viewers, MSNBC had 4.55 million, ABC had 4 million, PBS had 3.86 million, CBS had 3.29 million and Fox News Channel had 2.86 million, Nielsen said.

For the first time in years, Mitt Romney will be on Meet the Press.

This will not only be a test for Mitt Romney, but it will also determine whether David Gregory has the skills to make this anything more than just handing Romney a free, 30 minute ad reciting his talking points to Gregory's audience.

Gregory has had a few -- a precious few -- "gets" on his program, such as Newt Gingrich declaring the Ryan budget to be "right wing social engineering."

But, Newt is a loose cannon. He believes he is so much smarter than anyone else that they will embrace his every brainless thought, so he is really about as easy a catch as there is.

Romney, by contrast, will be incredibly disciplined. His taxes? Women's health? Not mentioning Afghanistan -- and then today calling it unimportant? Bain Capital? His ticket's utter lack of foreign policy experience?

Romney's advisers will tell him to bring everything back to the Friday jobs' numbers, justifying it by proclaiming that "this is what the American people want us to talk about."

Romney has also been told one key factor: TV anchors are 'taught' not to ask the same question more than three times, otherwise it appears as if they are badgering the person, and then the sentiment turns in the candidate's favor. So, knowing he is only going to be asked three times, all Romney has to remember is to grin-and-bear-it.

His views on women's choice: did he mean it when he said, "health of the mother?" or did he mean it when he said he supported a "Personhood Amendment absolutely?" Romney will answer that he wants these matters left up to the states, and that they are distractions from the issue of jobs.

What will Gregory do?

Regrettably, probably nothing. He will dutifully ask Romney the same question a few times and relent, but probably will not do that on many subjects. Then, he will throw Romney a few softballs, such as "was Ann pleased with how her horse performed at the Olympics?" and that will be that.

What could Gregory do if he had the skills, and the gumption?

A lot. Recognizing that Romney knows exactly what Gregory will do, and that Romney will repeat his talking points ad nauseam, Gregory has to do it very differently than Romney expects. To do that, he needs to structure his questions so that, if Romney adopts his "don't move off the talking point" strategy, then that alone "answers" the questions, or give him questions that are out of the realm of any talking point.

For example, instead of asking him why he is not releasing more taxes, ask him this: "Did you receive an amnesty from the IRS?" A non-answer of any kind to this question is a "yes." So, if Romney says "no," Gregory can say, "Well, Ronald Reagan said, 'trust but verify,'" and ask Romney if he is willing to have that verified by a third party, such as the IRS commissioner or a neutral accountant?

As a second example: "Are programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid consistent with Republican philosophy and principles of government?"

As a third example: "Morally, is healthcare a right, or should it be based on each person's ability to pay?"

As a fourth example: "Regardless of whether you did it or not, is it morally right for owners to saddle a company with debt and then use the money raised by that debt to be bought out, leaving the company with a large debt burden? Do you feel it is right for you to have made millions of dollars from doing that?"

Or, just to conclude: "The Blunt amendment, that you support, says that not just churches, but corporate CEOs, can deny a woman insurance coverage for contraceptives. Why should the CEO's "conscience" take precedence over the woman's?"

I am not holding my breath.

Not anymore. After Tim Russert's untimely death, the show went downhill fast. Granted no one anywhere comparable to Russert existed, but turning over MTP to David Gregory to host the show was a huge blunder. He is one of the most incompetent weak interviewers on national TV.

The couple of times I tuned-in I noticed that instead of improving, Gregory is less prepared, lazier & more partisan. His questions are generally always framed in a way that would be best described as apologetic or Republican-friendly. In other words, Romney will be asked tepidly-mild questions at best. And no follow-up questions either.

If Tim Russert were alive today, however, Romney would be held to a much higher standard. He would be made to answer for his falsehoods, fictions & lies. Unfortunately Gregory is too much a partisan wuss to do likewise. Until Gregory is replaced & no longer hosts the show, I refuse to waste my time.serena1313: I used to watch MTP. Not anymore. If they do, they are stupid people and must be belittled and dismissed. I don't think much of David Gregory.
Is this interview a sign of desperation from Mitt?

I thought the plan was to have the election bought and stolen for him so that all he has to do is make his appearances and look like he's putting up a fight.

I am hopeful that the American people are actually spoiling those plans and with enough effort will make sure he can't win with all of the money in the world and that all of the attempts to steal the election will fail completely.lbrillante: Typically Romney acts like he is a king and nohttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/lbrillante/interviewing-mitt-romney-_b_1866894_185334293.htmlHistory |Permalink |Share itThis comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. He won't have any better luck getting to reveal a single specific thing he would do regarding his so-called plan to bring prosperity to America. It will be more lies about the President's record along with a plea to just "trust him". Gregory might as well speak to a cardboard cut-out of Mitt Romney as far as getting any information that has not been scripted by his handlers.sawadee2000: Sadly David Gregory won't be able to make Mitt revealhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/sawadee2000/interviewing-mitt-romney-_b_1866894_185326993.htmlHistory |Permalink |Share itThis comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. Did you for the years in question pay Fed INCOME taxes? Did you take the amnesty deal for off shore tax havens from the Gov? These have NEVER been asked and will NEVER be asked. Why? They are made to promise not to ask them or Mitt will not go on. Scary. Sad. Disgusting. David is NO different. He will I doubt ask any real hardball questions or else Mitt would not be going on. And, David Gregory is totally incapable of following through with insisting on a non-evasive answer.

That's why Romney is willing to go on David Gregory's show.
He knows that it will appear better than Fox News, but be just as favorable to him.

Gregory is not going to ask Romney about Arithmetic.
Gregory will not ask for any details of anything related to the budget - including the magic of supply-side nonsense.iridium53: David Gregory is, apparently, incapable of asking a tough question.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/iridium53/interviewing-mitt-romney-_b_1866894_185317033.htmlHistory |Permalink |Share it photoGiganteSF2 Fans 3 hours ago ( 4:17 AM)Gregory is a softballer and a republican. Seriously, though. the man truly isn't capable.

I'd be shocked, shocked I tell ya, if he demanded an answer to any substantive question/s.

Like - how can you possibly believe that you could be elected President of this great country, when your campaign is mired in out and out lies?

Or, what is your position on the voter suppression your party has embarked up and as leader of your party, don't you think it appropriate to tell these GOP legislators that it is their duty as representatives of the people to do all that is necessary to allow people to vote? No cop outs with the idiotic lies about fraudulent voting. Hell we can't get people to the poles who have the right to vote, much less someone taking time to vote in place of someone else to NOT effect the outcome of an election. How utterly ludicrous that argument is!

Or since you appear to start 5 more wars, please explain how your intend to pay for them (with tax CUTS) and just who is it you plan to send (are you planning on reinstating the draft?).treetracker: It was interesting on Rachel's show on Friday that shehttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/treetracker/interviewing-mitt-romney-_b_1866894_185315187.htmlHistory |Permalink |Share itThis comment has been down-ranked into oblivion.
